Jurassic Island v6.0 is Online!

Here we go: after 12 years of absence from the world wide web, Jurassic Island is back online!

And... I'm afraid, I think I actually can't emphasize enough what I've been going through in the last two years, which, however, had an enormous impact on the progress of this project. 2 years ago, when we figured out Modding Genesis was slowly going to die out and the idea of JI's comeback was born, things were a bit different for me. Back then I had plenty of free time to invest in programming matters. I knew that pulling the trailer named JI v6 out of the mud would mean a lot work for all of us (especially because the internet has changed a lot from 2004 to 2014, and because we have to take care of legal issues and licenses nowadays), but I couldn't foresee that I would be going to invest most of my free time in the care for my grandfather (who died in August this year, aged 95) and one of my nephews. Along with that, our situation at our family business is changing, with my brother's family and myself slowly taking over from my parents and my aunt (including a renovation of our shop and workshops). So... that's all nice, I certainly wouldn't want to miss the time I've spent with my grandfather, same as I really enjoy spending time with my nephew, but - of course - that meant Jurassic Island v6 only made mediocre progress during the past few months.

To be honest, as much as I like to code myself, I more and more get the feeling that I couldn't ever produce something like JI v6.0 again. 12 years ago, things were simple. Of course, you had to adapt your website layout for different browsers too, but there weren't tons of different devices each using different display formats and user interface concepts. And, even though I have implemented responsive design in JI v6.0 (which I've tested on several different browsers and devices), I highly doubt it works everywhere as I originally expected it to. But I keep fingers crossed ;)

If you wonder why there's almost no contents on the main site yet, I have to admit it's true. I've done my work as programmer (and... a somewhat 'programmatic' designer), but what has to be generated now are contents. We need to create/upload articles, images and downloads now - if there's any talented people interested in participating: let me now.

For now - I wonder where this journey is leading. Will "Jurassic World 2" generate enough traffic for us to acquire new members? Will Modding Genesis veterans return to Jurassic Island? Will we build a solid staff to maintain this place?

Rank Images & JP Smilies

N!ko finished the rank images and JP smilies for the forums.

There's some really nice animated dinosaurs and characters from the movies, which can either be selected from the posting page or from "View more smilies" (in the case of the bigger images).

We also cleaned up the ranks a bit and adjusted the number of posts required achieve them. The ranks are now as follows:

Jurassic Island v6.0: a First Teaser

During the past few weeks I've been working hard to get a new framework and website design done for Jurassic Island v6.0.

Now, this is a first teaser image unveiling the new design.

Although the project makes good progress, there's still a lot of work to be done. Because I ain't really good at graphics design, the whole concept and layout follows a programmatic approach. Actually, the main page can compose a frameset (done with iframes), which allows to load and reload main contents, navigation bars and tool bars independently, and also offers to display news from the news forums on our phpBB. This is because I don't want to mod the phpBB3 too much (for simplifying the update process of the message board software) and because the main site should primarily serve as an image and downloads library (along with JP- and paleo-related articles).

Those familiar with website design will now be worried that pages loaded into frames won't display properly when someone visits the direct URL to the contents... but actually, I developed a solution to automatically reload them with the frameset through javascript.

However - what's finished so far only works on desktop/laptop devices, the responsive layouts for tablets and smartphones have yet to be developed.

...last but not least - I hope that DL doesn't mind if we're using his title graphics and logos (which he had designed last year for the JI revival). Sadly, I haven't heard from you for a while, buddy :)
